How much do we actually know about the tap water that flows out of our faucets? Some areas fair better than others with regards to pollutants, but lead, microorganisms, and nitrates may still make their way into the water in our homes. Recent debates on the adverse impact of fracking have brought even more attention to what is reaching our water supply. So before drinking up, let us take a closer look at what is potentially lurking in tap water including the chemicals, toxins, and bacteria in tap water.
What’s Actually in Your Tap Water
Regular water comes from one of two sources: surface water or groundwater. Chlorination does not kill off every contaminant. In fact, some disease carrying germs may still contaminate surface water – and eventually regular water – throughout the faeces of infected animals or people.
…It’s not just bacteria in tap water
Lead and copper may also crash the party through corroded pipes, mostly in houses built before 1970, when copper pipes and lead joints were considered appropriate. Another harmful finding: nitrates, substances from fertilizer, pesticide runoff, arsenic, and even fuel can be present in water sources. Then there is the alphabet soup of chlorination by products and some are the most harmful contaminants of them all.
With 91 pollutants covered by the Safe Drinking Water Act, contaminants are capped at concentrations usually safe enough for the average healthful individual. However, as we have seen with Flint, Michigan and other places in recent years, simply having laws in place doesn’t mean contaminants won’t end up making you very sick. The quality of water will even differ between houses. Needless to say, there are several ways to start sipping more soundly.
What you can do to protect yourself against the dangers of tap water
First, contact your local Public Water Supply to obtain Consumer Confidence Report. Be sure to ask about additional testing options if data is limited. Next, consider a whole house water filtration system or an under sink water filtration system. These water purification systems will ensure your water is free from toxins and contaminants (including chlorine, bacteria, organic contaminants, sediment, and more) .
Best Water Filtration Systems and Water Filters to protect against the dangers of tap water
- Zero Waste Reverse Osmosis Alternative | Membrane Water Purification System Preserves Healthful Minerals
- Under Sink Reverse Osmosis Alternative – Water on Water Technology Alternative to Reverse Osmosis System
- Everpure H-300 Cartridge, Everpure H-104 – 2,500 Gallon Capacity Water Filter Cartridge with Stainless Steel Canister

For those without a water filtration system, you should use cold water for drinking, cooking, and preparing infant formula. Warm water is likely to contain higher levels of lead. Also, routinely clean and replace faucet strainers, which could collect debris, metals, along with other sediment. If you have a water filtration system these suggestions are not relevant as you are protected.
