Bag Filter Water Treatment: What Are Bag Water Filters?

Bag filtration is a versatile and cost-effective way of filtering high volumes of water with high flow rates. Bag water filters are ideal for industrial applications, brewing, prefiltering, and more. These high-capacity systems can handle 90 - 2,400 gallons of water per minute. They're great for reducing the amount of silt, sand, dirt, and other types of sediment in your water.

This month we launched a new range of products—single bag filter housings, multi-bag filter housings, and replacement filter bags—so let's look at bag water filter treatment in more detail.

What is bag water filter treatment?

Bag water filter treatment involves placing one or more bag filters inside a filter housing to remove suspended solids from water. Specific bag filters vary depending on the industry in which they are used. This filtration method is both versatile and cost-effective for filtering large amounts of water quickly. They're great for reducing silt, sand, dirt, and other types of sediment.

Bag water filter treatment is an efficient method to reduce particles in large volumes of water at a high flow rate. Other filtration methods are not as cost-effective for such high volumes of water. Bag filters are a great option for industrial applications, brewing, pre-filtering, and more. Essentially, bag water filter treatment is used to remove large particles from water with high flow rates—it's not meant for specialized filtration.

Benefits of bag water filter treatment

There are several significant benefits to bag water filter treatment, including:

  • Filtering large volumes of water with high flow rates (90 - 2,400 gallons per minute, depending on the filter and housing)
  • High dirt-holding capacity—requiring fewer bag filter replacements compared to cartridge filters
  • Withstanding exposure to a wide range of conditions
  • Easy installation and replacement of bag filters
  • Cost-effectiveness for treating high volumes of water—cartridge filtration cannot compete for large water volumes at this price

Disadvantages of bag water filter treatment

The most significant disadvantage of bag water filter treatment is that it does not remove fine particles, bacteria, or chemicals. If fine particles, bacteria, or chemicals are not a concern in your water, this point can be disregarded. For more precise filtration, including the removal of fine particles, bacteria, or chemicals, cartridge or membrane filtration is required, though they come at a higher cost.

When applied correctly, bag filtration can offer more efficient and cost-effective performance than cartridge and membrane systems. Please contact us to learn more about our Premiere industrial water filter bags.

What applications is bag water filter treatment for?

Bag water filter treatment is ideal for commercial, industrial, and municipal applications that require a cost-effective way to filter large volumes of water at a high flow rate. Common applications include:

    • Agriculture
    • Pre-filtration
    • Brewing
    • Non-critical cleaning of final products
    • Removal of coarse particles that could damage equipment
    • Removal of challenging pollutants from a liquid stream
    • Groundwater
    • Cooling water
    • Industrial process water
    • Wastewater

Can I use a bag water filter system to treat the water at my house?

Bag water filter systems are primarily used for industrial filtration, but there are some residential applications as well. Bag filters are great for filtering large quantities of water quickly (50 - 2,400 gallons per minute). However, bag water filter treatment is not always practical or suited for residential use. The cost-effectiveness comes from the ability to filter massive quantities of water, so if you’re not using a lot of water, the savings may not justify the system.

If your household regularly uses at least 50 gallons of water per minute, a bag filter system may be a good fit. This could be the case if you have a large home (8,000+ square feet), a large number of people and appliances using water, or an application that requires a lot of water (such as agriculture, a swimming pool, or water features).

If your water contains a lot of suspended particles, you could benefit from a bag filter. Bag filters are particularly useful if you source water from a well. In this case, a bag filter can provide a first line of defense against particles, sticks, and other debris before the water undergoes more specialized treatment. Pre-filtering the water with a bag filter can reduce stress on your primary water filtration system, meaning your filter cartridges will last longer.

If you use at least 50 GPM of water in your household and have a lot of suspended particles in your water, you may benefit from a bag water filter system. Depending on what’s in your water, a secondary, more precise cartridge or membrane filter should be used, especially for drinking water.

For example, if you get water from a well and live on a farm where you need a large amount of water for personal and farming use, a bag water filter system would be ideal. The bag filter would remove large particles, sticks, and debris that could clog pipes, sprinklers, or irrigation systems. It could also serve as a pre-filter for water used in your home.
